How to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
The EHIC is issued automatically by Slovak health insurance companies and can be found on the back of the insurance card. If you need a new EHIC, you can obtain your card as follows:
- Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa: in eBranch, mobile application, by phone or in person (more information).
- Dôvera ZP : at eBranch or in person (more information)
- Union ZP: in eBranch, mobile application, by phone, e-mail, post or in person (more information (PDF, 0B))
You can process your application quickly, but it can take up to 30 days to deliver your pass. If you need to travel to another EU country earlier, we recommend that you apply for a replacement certificate, which will be issued by your health insurance company while you wait.
The EHIC covers basic and emergency healthcare in EU Member States. Usually it does not apply in private hospitals and ambulances. Each country has its own health system and surcharges. For more information on reimbursements in each EU country, go to YourEurope.eu (select the Healthcare category and check Medical treatment in another EU country).
In order to obtain a Slovak EHIC, you must be insured by one of the Slovak health insurance companies.
